Distinguished Students

Who are our 'Distinguished Students' ?

Anyone who had the opportunity to be involved in Richmond Road School and now has a public profile is one of our 'Distinguished Students'.

Most likely you were a student who attended during their primary school years from years 1 to 6 (or Primer 1 to Standard 6 / Form 2) - but you could also have been a student for a shorter period of time.

Our 3 ‘children’ all attended Richmond Road School
Brya from 1988-1994
Ropu 1
Awarded her PhD 2009

Megan from 1990-1996
Ropu 1 and later Ropu 4 the Maori bilingual Unit
BSC + post grad dip Health sciences

Cameron from 1994-2000
Ropu 4
3rd year student of Engineering at Auckland Uni.

I was involved with the school from the time Brya started until Cameron left in 2000, initially as part of a beautification project planting and tidying up the crib wall along Douglas Street and then the funding applications to ASB and Lotteries for the construction of the original adventure playground.  I joined the Board of Trustees in about 1990 I think and was Board secretary under various principals and through some very turbulent times through until the appointment of Shirley Hardcastle as principal.  I was very involved the  planning and funding applications for the relocation of buildings and creation of the central courtyard and hall complex and saw the formation of the Cook Island Unit and preschool which of course no longer exists and the French unit.

We have fond memories of the school which served our children well. They have all flourished academically and are wonderful, caring and tolerant people.

The Roll of Honour Board was not something students had the opportunity to pass very often. The Primary wing to the west and the Standards part of the school were on either side of the Board's location. Traffic movement by students between the two was not encouraged. It may have been that the Staff Room above (as I recall correctly?) wanted naturally to have noise restricted as much as possible.

I enjoyed talking to your ten year olds. They appeared very bright  and confident. I had been expecting older kids, not realising you no longer have Forms 1 & 2. I hope they enjoyed listening as much as I  enjoyed talking. Apart from the academic structure, the school hasn't  changed much. I was there when the pool was commissioned. I was  amused to hear that it has been de-commissioned some fifty years later. I don't think I will ever be as cold again as I was during the compulsory swimming classes on those dull chilly days with the wind coming straight off the Antarctic glaciers. Sorry I missed you but thanks again for the opportunity to tread some very familiar paths.
