Aaron Judge and Michael Conforto have emerged as New York’s two biggest baseball stars, jumpstarting what could be the start of two excellent careers and a new era ofbaseball in the Big Apple.Judge, the Yankees’towering right fielder, has burst onto the scene in 2017 with booming home runs and highlight-reel defensive plays. Conforto started the season on the bench before an injury to Yoenis Cespedes opened the door for consistent playing time, and he has thrived in an everyday role.MORE: Mike Trout opts for surgery, could mi s 6-8 weeksBut isearly season succe s sustainable for Judge and Conforto? And just how high are their ceilings? Let’s take a look and see which New York outfielder has the best chance to become a bonafide star. The case for Aaron JudgeJudge’s succe s has come as a surprise to many after he struggled in his first big league stint in 2016. Judge struck out 50 percent of the time in 2016 (42 times in 84 at-bats) and looked lost at the plate. He was practically an automatic out with two strikes, often chasing pitches out of the zone for strike three.Determined to right his 2016 wrongs, Judge worked on his approach at the plate during the offseason and the results have been better than anyone could have predicted. Entering play Tuesday, the 6-8 right fielder has a .319/.419/.687 slash line and leads all of baseball with 17 home runs.He https://www.rockiesedges.com/colorado-rockies/jake-mcgee-jersey has recorded a 2.89 WAR this season, trailing only Mike Trout among position players, and his .419 OBP ranks also ranks second in the American League behind Trout. There’s no question Judge has been excellent in 2017, but can he keep it going?Judge recorded just two roundtrippers in 19 games from May 5 to May 27 and saw his average drop from .337 to .316. But hewalked 11 times during the stretch to keep his OBP high.MORE: “Judge’s Chambers” could inspire more genius fan experiencesThe mini-slump was short-lived, asJudge snapped outin a big way over Memorial Day weekend. He slugged his first career grand slam to help lead the Yankees to a 9-5 win over the A’s on Sunday afternoon and homered again Monday in New York’s lo s to Baltimore. But Judge is not just an offensive player; he has wowed with his defense as well. He has posted a 0.42 dWAR through the first 46 games, which ranks 13th among American League outfielders. Ten of the 12 players players he trails are primarily center fielders. With terrific range and a strong arm from right field, Judge has made several eye-popping plays, including this catch against Boston, this throw against Toronto, and this stunning grab against Tampa Bay.So while power is Judge’s best tool, he has shown a knack for getting on base and provides solid defense, even when he’s not hitting dingers. His approach at the plate leads me to believe he can sustain this level of succe s and become an All-Star caliber Ian Desmond Jersey player. The case for Michael ConfortoConforto has seen a tremendous amount of succe s since filling in for Cespedes in the everyday lineup. He has shown an ability to hit to all fields with power and average, and has cut down on his strikeouts. The sweet-swinging lefty has posted a stellar .320/.412/.653 slash line to go along with 13 home runs and 33 RBIs in 45 games this season. While Conforto played well in a limited role early in the season, he has been even better since Cespedes was placed on the DL. The 24-year-old has 35 hits in 107 at-bats with nine home runs and 25 RBIs after replacing Cespedes in the lineup.Even more impre sive has been Conforto’s eye at the plate. He walked just seven times in April compared compared with 16 base on balls in May to raise his OBP over the .400 mark.Conforto is looking more like the rookie slugger who emerged in 2015 rather than the struggling fifth outfielder who was shuttled back and forth between Queens and the minors in 2016. The Mets needed Conforto to step up. He did that and more.GATTO: Mets should commit to summer sell-off as season slips awayWith Cespedes nearing a return, it will be interesting to see how the Mets align their outfield to keep Conforto in the everyday lineup. It’s safe to say Curtis Granderson’s days as a starter are over and Juan Lagares is better suited as a platoon player, leaving a vacancy in center field. The Mets can choose to play Cespedes or Conforto in center field, but with Cespedes’balky hamstring, the safe bet is that Conforto will play between Cespedes and Jay Bruce in the outfield. While his value is slight lower in center field, given his moderate defensive numbers (-0.32 dWAR), Conforto’s bat plays better in center than it would in the corners. His 2.18 oWAR would rank second in the league among center fielders behind Trout and fifth among all outfielders behind Trout, Corey Dickerson, Bryce Harper and Judge. It’ll be interesting to see how the toll of playing center field affects Conforto’s ability to produce at the plate, but it’s clear the slugger has found his rhythm and has a much better approach at the plate. With everything else going on in Queens, Conforto should be the least of the Mets’ worries right now.The verdictBoth Judge and Conforto have climbed the ladder and rank among the top outfielders in their https://www.rockiesedges.com/colorado-rockies/charlie-blackmon-jersey respective leagues. Both will garner All-Star consideration and are capable of sustaining their high level of succe s throughout the year. But who has more value? While their bats are about equal, Judge has emerged as the more complete player. He has the lead in overall WAR (2.89 to 1.99), dWAR (0.42 to -0.32) oWAR (2.3 to 2.18) and has a slightly better batting line.It will be interesting to see how the rest of their seasonsand careers shape up. Both players will be succe sful, but Judge has the slight edge right now.Follow SN contributor Zach Gewelb on Twitter@thegewelbino.
