Zoning

To confirm whether you live in zone refer to map at the bottom of this page or use Find a school tool

Enrolment at Richmond Road School is governed by an enrolment scheme approved by the Ministry of Education. The enrolment scheme details our school’s ‘home zone’, and all students living in the ‘home zone’ detailed below are entitled to enrol at the school on the general roll (or Kiwi Connection - English-medium) at any time. However, living within the ‘home zone’ does not guarantee a place in the school’s Special Programmes.

If you would like your child to enrol in one of our bilingual units/ ‘Special Programmes’, please complete the application/enrolment form by September of the year prior to your child starting school.  Applications must be received by 3pm, date to be confirmed for 2022 for your child to be included in the main enrolment round for 2022.  Your child may be enrolled after this period if there are still spaces left in these programmes.

Students who live in the home zone are entitled to enrol at the school at any time. Submitting an enrolment when a child is 4 years old - helps us plan for their arrival.

Out of Zone Enrolments

Each year the Board will determine the number of places likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The Board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date (usually a date in September) by which all applications must be received.

Students who apply for our special programmes (bilingual units) are selected based on criteria set out in the enrolment scheme.  If the number of applicants who meet the criteria exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot.

If you require a copy of the enrolment scheme or enrolment pack these can be downloaded from this page.
For more information please contact the office (office@richmondroad.school.nz)

Priority of Applications

Applications for enrolments will be processed in the following order of priority:
First Priority will be given to students who have been accepted for enrolment in the following special programmes run by the school and approved by the Secretary for Education.

(a) Te Whānau Whāriki   Māori Language Immersion Unit

(b) Mua I Malae               Samoan Language Bilingual Unit
                                           (Y0-2 Immersion/Y2-6 Bilingual)

(c) L'Archipel                   French Language Bilingual Unit
                                           (Y0-2 Immersion/Y2-6 Bilingual)

Second Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students of the school.

Third Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students of the school.

Fourth Priority will be given to applicants who are children of Employees of the school’s Board.

Fifth Priority will be given to all other applicants

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status will be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.

Bilingual Classes Special Programmes Enrolment Interviews

Before children are accepted and part of the enrolment process, students and Whānau must attend a special programmes enrolment interview where they will be scored regarding the following criteria:
  • Proficiency of the heritage language.
  • Sibling of current students in the programme
  • Sibling of a former student in the programme.
  • Children of employees of the Board working full-time in the programme.
  • Applicants who have attended our affiliated preschool (Aoga Fa’a Samoa, Ritimana Kohanga Reo or La Petite Ecole) on a full time basis for the immediate preceding year.
  • Applicants who have attended any other preschool with language heritage for the immediately preceding year and/or applicants who have lived permanently with a parent or caregiver who is a proficient speaker of the heritage language for the immediately preceding year.
During the interview, the parents/caregivers will need to sign a pledge for the following items:
  1. Students in the programme will have access to support at home through either: A parent or caregiver who is actively learning the heritage language in an approved programme. A parent or caregiver they live with who is a proficient speaker of the heritage language. A caregiver who has been employed/seconded to speak to the child in the heritage language.
  2. Parents/caregivers of each student in the programme will make every reasonable effort to attend all parent group meetings of their ropu. This expectation will be deemed not to be met where a student in the programme is not represented by at least one parent or caregiver on more than three occasions in any school year.
  3. Each parent/caregiver will actively participate to assist his or her parent ropu to carry out the assigned duties when rostered.

It is acknowledged that, due to individual circumstances, one or more of these items may not be reasonably achievable for some parents/caregivers. It is the responsibility of the parent/caregiver to raise any issues of this nature during the enrolment interview.
